The Closest Thing to Real Tortoiseshell

D’Addario’s Casein guitar and instrument picks supply a warmth, attack, and output that was previously only available in true tortoiseshell picks. But unlike tortoiseshell, casein is a humane material derived from dairy protein that can be shaped into endless styles and thicknesses. The D’Addario 1CA7-01 comes to you in a traditional 351 shape for a familiar feel in the hand. A right-handed bevel gives you better agility from string to string, and at 2.0mm thick the 1CA7-01 packs plenty of output for single-note leads and solos. If you’ve been searching for a tortoiseshell alternative that doesn’t compromise on tone, ethics, or durability, then D’Addario’s 1CA7-01 Casein guitar pick from Sweetwater ought to be high on your list.

D’Addario 1CA7-01 2.0mm Casein Guitar Pick Features:

  • A natural material derived from dairy protein
  • The closest thing to true tortoiseshell
  • Delivers warmth, attack, and output comparable to tortoiseshell
  • Familiar 351 shape
  • Right-handed beveled edge glides across strings for superb comfort
  • 2.0mm thick

Game changing pick

Over the years, I found myself gravitating towards thicker and thicker plectrums. Then I read about Blue Chip (double the price) and found the D'Addario Casein pick. I truly thought, this can't make that much of a difference...it really does in the world of playing Jazz. Does it look slippery? Sure, but it's not...in fact, the longer you play using it, the more it stays in place. Beautiful, beveled edges, great feel overall.
Yes, they're expensive, but oddly with that price tag, I haven't lost one. Thanks to Will Newbill, a damn fine sales engineer.
If you play jazz or looking for a soft tone, like 'em thicker, it's fantastic.

Ok hear me out...

So... I bought this as a gag gift for myself, having never spent this much on a single pick. My general thought was, this can't be worth the money. Unbeleievebly I was wrong. I love this pick. I love the way it feels and sounds. If you're thinkiong about it, treat yourself and get one. I love it lol.

True Game Changer!

Material and shape matters when it comes to achieving the tone you are looking for. This casein pick works for my technique and helps enable me to play what I am hearing in my head without the guitar pick interfering. This is what I've been looking and searching for for over 40 years. Obvious negative is the price, but oh well...still highly recommended.

Very Different, Very Cool Pick!

As I continue to explore new guitar pick materials, I came across this and had to try it for myself. The price tag is deterring at first, but after trying the pick, it's worth it in my opinion. I can see why people sought after true tortoise shell picks.

For starters, you get some killer output from every little swipe. This is usually typical for picks this thick (compared to the .73 ballpark I normally use) but is much more pronounced in this case. There is also a noticeable warmth that sounds quite smooth. The most impressive thing, to me, and the hardest to put into words is the way it attacks; the bevel glides off the string so smoothly - almost like the pick lubricated - yet you get such a pronounced and booming note out of each strike almost effortlessly. It's also never "too much" because it lacks the clip/chip noise you get out of any other pick. It's like nothing else I've played with.

I usually don't play with picks this thick, but I do really like this one a lot. It's very fun and I use it all the time, especially if I'm playing lead. I almost think the material benefits more at this thickness, but I do think it'd be fun to try a thinner teardrop version. Otherwise, I have no complaints on the money spent, but I'm definitely not trying to lose this pick anytime soon! If you're looking to be adventurous with your picks and have a few extra bucks to spend, give this a try. You might just love it!

No Turning Back to Any Other Pick

I took a chance on this $ pick, and I was rewarded with a pick I can't afford to every lose. Solo guitar players will especially realize how much better this pick is than any other. Personally, I use hybrid picking for my solo Bossa Nova gigs, and this pick is warm, articulate, and great for dynamics. My only problem is cutting it down, I play right over the pick-up so I have to cut about 3/16ths of an inch off, which uses up about 6 Exacto blades and takes a couple of hours to do. Worth every second!
