D'Addario Tuning Machine Replacement

After a professional neck re-fret and a bridge saddle replacement to get a slightly crispier tone (original bone saddle replaced with brass saddle) my 1971 Ibanez Jamboree plays like a dream again.
I tried to keep the old open tuning machines, but the worn 52-year old worm gears had too much play and required frequent retuning. So I decided to replace them with new encapsulated ones. Since I never really liked the guitar's original chrome-plated tuners, I ordered a set of six D'Addario tuners at reasonable cost from Sweetwater in a satin black finish.

Since my guitar was built in Japan, Ibanez was following the metric standard:
My old tuners had 6.3mm diameter string pegs which ran through vintage style Aluminum bushings pressed into 8mm diameter holes in the headstock.
The removal of the old tuners was a piece of cake … remove two very small roundhead screws per tuner and just simply pull it out to the back.

That left me with the old collared bushings. I definitely did not want to "force" them out towards the front of the headstock in case they were glued in, because it might fracture the heavily lacquered front of the headstock.
So I used a 7mm wood dowel and a small plastic hammer and VERY CAREFULLY tapped from the rear of the headstock to see if they were just held by friction and could be pushed out to the front of the headstock by hand.
This worked just fine on four of the six bushings; the other two were too firmly seated.

So I covered the front of the headstock with masking tape to prevent scratches and used needle-nose pliers to just ROTATE the collar of the bushing without pulling up on it. That did it. I was able to pull them out without any further problems.

Since the new tuners require 10mm diameter holes, I needed to ream up the existing holes from 8 to 10mm diameter. Since I knew this was coming, and special "reaming tools" for musical instruments are quite expensive, I had ordered a metric stepped drill bit (4-6-8-10-12mm) with wide steps from a mail-order company with the name of a very large river in South America (…starts with "A"…).
Using a hand drill at slow speed this took no more than 5 minutes to ream the existing holes to 10mm. Since the headstock was thicker than the "10mm step" of the bit was long, I had to do it from the front and the back of the headstock. The results were beautifully smooth 10mm holes.

The new tuner installation is a piece of cake if you follow D'Addario's included guide sheet.

By the way, I tried to be as detailed as possible with my instruction story. The actual work took less than 1 hour!!

I also REALLY liked the look of my guitar with the new black tuners!! Actually so much that I replaced the six bridge pins, the volume and tone control knobs, the guitar strap buttons, and the guitar's output jack with black versions.
The only thing I won't replace - ever - is my vintage DeArmond pickup!

Best Tuners Ever

I wanted to make a few modifications to my Epiphone Les Paul Muse. I was a Grover man, when it came to tuners. I saw these online on thre Sweetwater page. After talking to my sales engineer, Austin Zachrich, I decided to purchase them. Tuners that lock and cut the string, it made my string installations Easy. Thank you Sweetwater and thank you Austin for your knowledge

Awesome Tuners.

I'm fairly new to guitar and learning, I fixed my first broken guitar (Sigma Dm2) that shipping broke 2 tuners and the head stock was cracked (Grovers). I ordered these and could not be happier. Not only did they cut the strings for you they lock in on tuning. I am very happy with these. I may even get a set for my Yamaha APX 600. non locking suck! LOL. I highly recommend these. even a novice like me put them on lol!!

I wish I upgraded sooner!

These tuners are absolutely great! I was able to install them myself without any major mishaps. The article from Sweetwater on how to install them was all I needed.

I also checked with my Sweetwater rep, Vaughn, before I ordered them to make sure they were compatible. It was great having an expert help me and tell me what I needed to do before I ordered them so I didn't get unpleasantly surprised with the install process.

The tuners are great! So easy to change strings now. It took me less than 5 minutes to change all my strings instead of 20+ minutes because the string keeps slipping or becoming unwound from the tuner. The automatic trimming feature is so great too. No sharp edges and the headstock looks so clean!

Love these tuners!

If you're looking to upgrade the tuners on your guitar, these are the ones you need! Not only do they make restringing your guitar simpler, but the locking mechanisms keep your guitar in tune better, even if you bend your strings a lot like I do! The icing on the cake though is the "auto trim" feature that automatically cut the excess string!! NO MORE GETTING YOUR FINGERS IMPALED BY THE NUB END OF THE STRING (I know you know what I'm talking about!)!! Please they make the head of your guitar look really cool!
These tuners are totally worth it, and I'll be buying more to replace on my other guitars very soon!
Music background: I have a blues and classic rock band that plays locally two or three times a month… Just enough to keep me sane!
