The Full Gamut of Analog-style Echoes

Strymon’s Volante delivers the full gamut of analog-style echoes — magnetic drum echo, tape echo, and reel-to-reel studio echo. It’s also a stereo multi-head delay with an onboard looper and independent vintage spring reverb. You can really dial in the vintage vibe with this pedal, from the natural saturation and soft clipping of overdriven magnetic media to mechanics, wear, head spacing, machine speed, and more. Enjoy complete control of every parameter via MIDI. Store up to 300 presets. Take command via expression pedal — Volante is primed for maximum emotional expression. Beyond that, instrument/line-level capabilities make it equally at home on your pedalboard or in the studio. Volante includes tap tempo, 24-bit/96kHz sound quality, and selectable true bypass/analog buffered bypass switching — it’s one of the most feature-packed delays on the market.

Three vintage echo machines in a single pedal

Volante can conjure up just about every type of analog-style echo you can dream up. Its Drum setting yields the warm, harmonically rich, saturated sound of a magnetic drum echo — you can almost smell the tubes cooking. The Tape setting serves up well-crafted multi-head tape echoes, complete with smooth tape saturation and tape’s characteristic nonlinearities. The Studio setting reproduces the unmistakable sound of a classic reel-to-reel machine, giving you a clean, pristine sound that’s overflowing with full-bodied warmth and fidelity.

Four playback heads with individual control

Each of Volante’s four playback heads can be set for full volume, half volume, or off. And independent of playback level, you can switch each head in or out of the feedback circuit — you can even switch heads into the feedback circuit that aren’t activated for playback. You can also pan each head individually. Guitarists here at Sweetwater have had a blast crafting interesting, complex rhythmic patterns, unique atmospheric textures, and interesting psychoacoustic stereo images with Volante.

Create loops and electrifying special effects

You can use Volante to create loops — with a magnetic personality. These loops degrade and evolve, and you can play them in reverse with a tap of your foot. Pause them for a mechanical tape stop effect, or change their speed. Or if you really want to bring on sonic Armageddon, press and hold a footswitch to unleash classic psychedelic delay feedback. With a bit of experimentation, Volante can yield rich, hypnotic, unpredictable — but musically rewarding — results.

Variable head spacing yields interesting rhythmic repeats

Vintage multi-head tape machines could be a bit finicky. Their heads weren’t always evenly spaced, which led to all kinds of interesting sonic interactions when multiple heads were set to repeat. Volante takes this into account with a Spacing control that’s adjustable between Even, Triplet, Golden Ratio (for dense, non-overlapping echoes), and Silver Ratio (for non-overlapping repeats biased toward the quarter note). And the Spacing control is continuously variable, allowing you to morph between its settings in real time.

Add dimension with an independent spring reverb

Like many classic tape echo machines, Volante includes an independent spring reverb, allowing you to add dimension to your playing while imparting a gorgeous, gentle character. Volante’s spring reverb infuses your tone with an inimitable vintage vibe while enhancing your delayed signals.

Over 40 5 star reviews for a reason

With so many pedals to choose from, Is this pedal still relevant in 2022? Heck yes! This pedal sounds AMAZING. Even with the new BOSS and Line6 pedals, this remains a standout in my opinion. It has replaced 3 separate pedals on my board - a tape delay, a spring reverb, and a looper.

The new DL4 offers more variety of delays and more reverbs, but I like the simplicity of the Volante. Nearly every function is available instantly via dedicated switches, knobs, or buttons. I would mostly use tape style delays anyway, and the Volante does this incredibly well. It may be a one-trick-pony but it's a hell of a good trick! It has line inputs so it doubles as a mix tool, and it's a bit more compact. I also love that it is Made in the USA.

As good as this sounds in mono, it sounds even more incredible in stereo.

Whatever delay sound you are hearing in your head, you can probably get it with this pedal, and the included spring reverb is a nice touch as I have one amp without reverb.

There is a reason it has received over 40 5 star reviews and it is worth every penny.

FYI - Volante is The "perfect" companion to the TimeLine

I was on the fence. I had a Timeline, one of the best made and fully equipped delay pedals out there even today.
Well, nothing ventured nothing gained- I took a chance on the Volante being an addition to my rack, and not to replace, and boy I'm so glad I did!!! Where the Timeline fills the void on my guitar tracks, the Volante adds spice and structure. And it's fully midi controllable for my Helix! So if you already have a Timeline, be not afraid to add the Volante to your mix. You can thank me later. ; )

Just Fantastic

I’ve owned many delay pedals over the years from several makers. Some were good others were really good but none of them even comes close to the sounds I get from this pedal. In fact, I sold two Strymon pedals to buy this, the DIG and the elCapistan. With the Volante, I’ve found I can cover most of the DIG territory and can do everything I could would with the el Capistan and way, way more. I’ve never herd a better delay in over 40 years of playing.

The Real Deal

I was looking at different tape and drum delay pedals, but Strymon really hit a home run with this one which gives 3 different delay options (drum, tape and studio). Each one sounds fantastic, and general sound quality is amazing. I've owned it for a couple months and slowly working through the different features. There are so many I'll probably be at it for a year. Highly recommended.

Using with organ, sounds fantastic

I love echos that have vibe to them. Back in the day I owned an Echoplex and I still remember that sound. I play organ and have a Viscount Legend Live which has an effects loop. I've been using the Volante in the loop to add some spacey echos during parts of solos and its so warm and fuzzy sounding. The ability to adjust the mechanical aspects of the machines it's modeling and to add some glitches, etc. to the sound just enhances the vibey aesthetic of this box. I haven't tried it in the studio yet but having the ability to do MIDI clock sync will come in very handy plus having hands on control of an actual piece of gear beats using a mouse to automate FX plugins hands down. I am also looking forward to trying out the looping features more in depth. This is my first piece of Strymon gear but my guitar player friends have been raving about them for some time and now I see why. The hardware has a quality "heft" to it, the buttons are smooth and feel expensive and the layout is flexible without being overwhelming. Less is more in my book when it comes to parameters on effects so this slots right into my performance and work flows. Highly recommended!

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Nick Rice

Easily the most sophisticated, yet easy-to-use delay pedal I've ever played with. In Strymon fashion, you can go as deep or as surface level as you'd like and get a great sounding, pseudo-authentic, tape delay sound. I've used it on anything from a simple slap back to a lush, complex soundscape.
