The Legendary German Sound

At Sweetwater, Telefunken microphones are held in high esteem, and we're not just talking about the vintage ones. Developed, handcrafted, and tested to fastidious quality standards in Telefunken's Connecticut facility, the Alchemy Series is the company’s next-generation large-diaphragm tube condenser microphones. Inspired by classic mics — but far from slavish re-creations — these mics are designed and voiced from the ground up with unique sonic profiles. The TF47 is based on the bold, mid-forward "German sound." Drawing its inspiration from the historic U47 and M49, the TF47 captures full, deep low end and smooth, detailed highs and is an excellent choice for adding presence and depth to any source. Telefunken set a lofty design target for themselves: one of the most revered and sought-after microphones ever made, heard on countless iconic recordings.

Sumptuous results on vocals, guitar amps, and drums

Legendary artists like the Beatles, Miles Davis, Michael Jackson, and John Coltrane all owe their sound, in part, to the original 47. Frank Sinatra wouldn't go near any other vocal mic. Mercury recorded full symphony orchestras with only three of them set to omnidirectional. The Telefunken TF47 is handcrafted to the tightest tolerances using top-drawer materials, and its sound has been honed through meticulous real-world testing. The result is a mic with a warm, sweet sonic character and the ability to render virtually any source with authoritative self-assuredness. These characteristics make it especially adept at capturing vocals, guitar amps, and tom toms.

Custom capsule, vacuum tube, and transformer

The TF47 employs a new-old-stock Telefunken 5840W tube. The TF47's custom-designed vintage-spec BV8 output transformer, built for Telefunken by a reputable transformer factory using high-quality core material, is a replica of the BV8 transformer used in the vintage 47. Likewise, the center-terminated capsule is a modern K47-style custom design, dual-sided to provide the TF47 with both cardioid and omnidirectional polar patterns — just like an original 47 — plus a bonus figure-8 pattern, all switchable remotely from the microphone's included external power supply.

Explore the sonic possibilities

The TF47's three polar patterns — cardioid, omni, and figure-8 — give you immense flexibility when it comes to exploring the sonic possibilities offered by different recording techniques. With two of these superb microphones, you can implement stereo techniques such as Spaced Pair (A/B), X-Y (including Blumlein), ORTF array, and mid-side (M-S). You could even mic an entire symphony orchestra with nothing but three judiciously placed TF47s set to omni.

The next-generation 47

Every serious studio should have at least one pair of high-quality large-diaphragm tube condenser mics — and the Telefunken TF47 is inspired by a legendary one. You can use the TF47 on just about anything — with world-class results. It's simply stunning on vocals, acoustic guitars, double bass, electric guitar and bass cabs, drums and percussion, strings, brass, and woodwinds. And you haven't lived until you've heard a grand piano spring to life when miked with a pair of TF47s. Considering its unique sonic virtues, impressive performance, and outstanding value, it would be wise to have two of them in your mic locker for recording tracks in stereo!

You can not get better than this

I definitely understand that some people have their brand loyalty and or information from friends but let me say this. this particular mic is beyond your expectations. I am seriously blown away with this Mic. Right out of the box with a zero setting on everything, the quality exceeded anything i could think of. The big thing you will notice is that there are really no random transients with this mic. Before you look at other brands or models, this versatile mic is a go to for everything you need. I can not say enough good things about it.

Buy it and dont look back.

Beautiful Neumann Sound - No Annoying Fizz

I absolutely LOVE the Telefunken TF47. For many years I've been trying to find the right mic for recording my "singer's voice", trying and owning many, knowing that in general, I love the Neumann type of sound. But the high fq push that every LDC seems to have these days drives my "sound engineer's ears" absolutely insane - I hate it! For whatever reason, I perceive it as a sizzly edge, a 8-9k kind of distortion that on something like a TLM 103 is really hard, if not impossible, to dial out - especially if you have multiple layered tracks.

Enter the Telefunken TF47. It totally has that Neumann sound to it, and does have a bit of a presence push, but farther down than most modern LDCs. But it definitely does not have that high shelf sizzle all the way up the scale. Compared to most LDCs it sounds a bit dark on initial recording. But with my voice at least, adding back a little EQ push in the 10-12k range, it is absolutely perfect - breathtaking in fact. Full bottom, beautifully clear mids, sweet clear air on top, and no 7-9k edgy crunchy sizzle that makes me insane.

I am a very happy camper with this mic - I love it.

It also doesn't hurt that it's a local Connecticut product, made (ok assembled and tested) just 35 miles up the road.

Tf47

I'm happy running through a neve 1073 then Apollo x4
Was looking to get a similar tone to the nuemann m49
That I recorded on in a professional studio. Definitely not that but also definitely doesn't disappoint one bit
It's warm, full and doesn't sacrifice the higher frequencies.
Only recording vocals on this mic
I am biased for about the lower frequencies starting around 200 and I'm definitely boosting lows on my pre. As well.

Love this microphone

I've been using this microphone to record vocalists for a few months and I'm very impressed with the sound. Originally, I was looking at this model and the TF51. They're both about the same price but I opted for this one because of the character of this model.

This microphone will give you smooth, warm vocals. Don't be afraid to reduce low more low end than you might be used to. I've found I don't need to do much boosting in the 3000 Hz range if at all. This microphone isn't "airy" like you might find in a Neumann so boosting the high end is still needed.

The clarity in this thing is awesome! I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

The Telefunken Tf47 is a Great Mic!!!!!!

If you look around the internet, there is not much ratings about this mic. I am very pleased with this mic. Not only is the overall build impressive, but the sound quality is just amazing. I have owned a U87ai, recorded on a Sony Cg800 and other high end microphones in the past. I use this mic in my own home studio, even just using the Apollo twin x pre's and minimal EQ in needed. It is my go to mic in my mic locker now. The best quality about this mic is how it sits in the mix and the clarity you get with vocals. Thank you Telefunken!!!!!! First review I have ever done. It deserves some chatter!!!!!
