EL34b

I just got this set last week! It's so nice to get a new set of tubes and put them in your amp and bias it and the amp sound great!! These el34 are best money can buy! If you like that vintage Marshall sound the valves will dot the job! Thanks sweet water.

Tung - Sol EL34B

I wanted update every one how great these's tube are! My amp i have is a Blackstar HT Stage 100mk2 amp.I have using these tube for a long time now. the set that is in it right now has been in this amp 2 years now!and the tone is sweet its my go too EL34 for sure! Tip! One of the things i do is make sure the amp is bias to spec.I tryed other EL34's there didn't what i wanted but these right away i new i had a winner! You pay more money or get these and enjoy the sound and sweet tone of what this EL34 can do.
Music background: 7 years now!

Rating based on the sound, not lifespan (since it's my first purchase of these tubes).

I was going to get the Mesa Pair, but they were sold out. I figured if four match, then I basically have two matching pair.

I put these in a Marshall Origin 20, and it really opened the sound up from the Marshall branded JJs that were in there. I feel like it opened up the sound spectrum. These are so much clearer for both low gain and high gain. I should probably add that I replaced all the preamp tubes with Tung-Sol's also, but they obviously are doing something right, unless quality control issues arise in the future, these are going to be what I replace my power tubes with each and every time. I almost feel fortunate that the Mesa/Boogie Pair was out of stock, because I am totally 100% satisfied with the sound I am getting now.

Great Tubes! But May Require a Re-Bias

2nd set from Sweetwater. First set was in a year or longer. But just installed a new set and had some issues.
My amp is a 1972 Marshall Super Lead 100 watt. The same amp/circuit as the Marshall 1959HW they make today.

My amp went nuts, popping and humming. Two tubes went into failure. Meaning they were glowing like molten lava! I compared the voltage info on the box to my first set, and this new set was definitely hotter.

The next day I swapped the order of the tubes, and had improved results. Still some red glow in the gray metal center on one or two tubes, but at least they were not going in to failure. But still not 100% working/sounding right.

I decided to pull the chassis and experiment with the bias adjustment. Not having any bias equipment, I went old school. I made note of where the bias was set, it was halfway. Then I dialed it all the way back counter clockwise. Flipped on the amp, at this point there was no red glow on the gray metal center of the tubes, but the amp sounded cold, harsh, and thin. Which is exactly what happens when bias is set too low. When the bias is set too high, that's when things go wrong. So you gotta find the happy medium setting where amp is sounding warm, but not causing the tubes to go into failure. I made small adjustments clockwise, checked the tubes, and waited a few minutes before adjusting again. I ended up just below the halfway point, with no red glow on the gray metal center. I will be taking the amp to a tech soon for bias and other stuff, but all good for right now.

Rene Martinez guitar/amp tech for Stevie Ray Vaughn, now with John Mayer for some years. He stated that you really should bias your amp daily, because power from the wall is always drifting up or down. Most of us can't or won't be able to do that. But for a serious player working at the level of John Mayer or Bonamassa then maybe yeah.

But it really is best to re-bias when putting in a new set of power tubes. And preferably have an amp tech with proper bias equipment do the work.

Lastly, these are great sounding tubes! Clean and punchy, quite Fendery sounding for an EL34.
