The Best of Two Tonal Worlds in One Great Pre/DI

The Universal Audio 710 Twin-Finity mic preamp/DI gives you the best of tube and solid-state tones — and even lets you blend them together! The 710 houses a Class A FET mic preamp, as well as a Class A tube pre. A Tone Blending knob lets you take the 710 from solid-state "bite" to a classic tube circuit and lets you continuously blend them to nail your signature sound. The Twin-Finity's dual gain stage controls also let you crank up the gain and add tasty vintage-style coloration to your signal. At Sweetwater, we love to paint with sound, and the 710 Twin-Finity has an incredible sonic palette packed into its compact half-rack chassis.

Tube or solid-state: How about both?

The 710 Twin-Finity tube/solid-state tone-blending mic pre/DI is the first preamp ever to offer phase-aligned blending of discrete tube and solid-state circuits. This preamp can be 100% tube, 100% solid-state, or anything in between! Use the input gain to drive the Class A triode tube stage into creamy saturation, then dial in a little transient bite from the solid-state transimpedance circuit, or vice versa — or any combination you can dream up.

Innovative circuit design

The 710's innovative circuit design is the key to its sonic flexibility. A solid-state transimpedance input amp simultaneously drives separate phase-aligned tube and solid-state gain stages that are summed to a single output. You control the mix between the 310V single-ended Class A triode tube stage and solid-state transimpedance stage via the Trans-Tube blend knob, which offers continually variable blending between 100% tube and 100% solid-state, letting you easily dial in your own signature sound from an almost infinite spectrum of unique tones.

Classic UA controls and versatility

In classic UA fashion, the 710 features dual gain stage controls (Gain/Level) which can radically vary the amount of coloration and distortion by allowing you to crank up the input gain like a guitar amp. The VU meter features a unique "Drive" mode that allows you to see how hard you are driving the input stage. The discrete JFET DI input circuit can also easily handle any electric instrument. Guitar and bass players will especially appreciate the 710's ability to bring out the best of both active and passive pickups. The 710 Twin-Finity includes a 19" rack kit for mounting one or two units.

Universal Audio 710 Twin-Finity Tube/FET Mic/Line Preamp/DI Features:

  • Phase-aligned tube/solid-state tone blending
  • Dual gain stages for a variable vintage coloration
  • Discrete JFET DI with 2.2M ohm ultra hi-Z impedance
  • 70dB+ of gain, +48-volt phantom power, pad (15dB), polarity invert, and highpass filter (75Hz)
  • Rear-panel XLR Mic input, XLR Line input, and XLR Line output
  • 19" rackmount kit for 1 or 2 units included
  • Legendary UA build quality and heritage

Stellar and Worth the Investment

Clean, solid signal, plenty of hookup options,,even ran a Radial J48 into the Mic input with phantom power. There is a noticeable difference between the tube and transistor sides. They are both good and there is a blend for everything that will be just about perfect. I thought this would be a bit much for my "bedroom studio" but it has made a huge difference in my recordings. From running a bass direct to congas to a mic'd guitar amp

Best preamp in my studio

I've been a performing musician for over thirty years, and have been building my home studio for the past 6 years. I've recorded and released several finished songs and many demos. My primary preamps for vocal recordings have been my dbx compressor/limiter and my trusted vintage Aphex TubeEssence. This UA unit surpasses everything in my rack. I've made several vocal recordings with this Twin-Finity, and so far have no doubts about this being an instant upgrade to my studio.

Wow! This really is awesome!

Several Sound Engineers I know in Los Angeles suggested that if I was serious about having an awesome home recording studio, I needed to get this. I told my Sales Engineer, Ben Robinson, what I wanted to accomplish, and he suggested this. I bought it at the same time that I upgraded my Audio Interface (FocusRite 18i8, which is really really great for an audio interface under $500) to an Apollo X6. I have to say that I had extreme difficulties hooking everything up correctly (because I don't know what I am doing). I called Universal Audio once, and they were not very helpful in getting this to work with my Logic Pro X software. Then, I called Sweetwater (Duh, I should have done that first!!!), and Tech Support walked me through everything to get it just right. Once I got it working correctly, it really is quite awesome and you can blend, and "color" the sounds coming out of your microphones. (NOTE: Cheap microphones are still going to sound cheap, so get yourself some really great microphones and you will not be sorry. I upgraded to Telefunken and Lauten Audio). I could not be more pleased with this and can hardly wait to see what I can produce once I figure out what I am doing. Cheers.

710 Twin Finity pre amp

One word: Awesome. This pre amp has done everything I thought it would. I"ve been told that one can"t go wrong with a Universal Audio pre amp and I must say that was a true statement. Thank you. My recording rack is really shaping up.

Outstanding

This is an incredible mic pre and is built like a tank. The variances between tube and transistor are subtle but makes a very apparent difference depending if your recording transient heavy sources or sustained instruments.
I have used this to record Bass DI's (phenomenal) and of course an array of acoustic, vocal and guitar cabs. Truly a workhorse mic pre that doesn't break the bank.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Bart Good

The Universal Audio 710 Twin-Finity is one great-sounding preamp! I recently did a shootout with it against several other high-end pres, and it stood out as being the most versatile in this price range. If you're looking for your first high-end preamp (or just want to add another great, multifaceted pre to your sonic arsenal), then you should definitely consider the UA 710. To Twin-Finity and beyond!
